She is old and young at the same time:

In VLT’s Stage II season opener, author Lindsay- Abaire finds laughter and love instead of tragedy

What normally happens when a young person is afflicted with a diabolical disease? A disease so cruel, it causes premature aging in a teenager who must deal with a world that thinks she’s 60 or 70 years old. Well, whatever might normally happen, in Kimberly Akimbo playwright David Lindsay-Abaire sees opportunities for love and laughter.

The play opens Venice Little Theatre’s 2007-08 Stage II season on November 1 and runs through November 18, 2007. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $23.00 and are onsale now at the theatre’s box office, by phone at 941-488-1115 or online at www.venicestage.com.

Set in the wilds of suburban New Jersey, the play is a hilarious and heartrendering telling of such a story. Kimberly, just 16 years old, is aflicted with a rare condition causing her body to age much faster than it should. When she and her family flee Secaucus under dubious circumstances, Kimberly is forced to reevaluate her life while contending with a hypochondriac mother, a rarely sober father, a scam-artist aunt, her own mortality and, most terrifying of all, the possibility of first love.

When it opened in New York in 2003, The New York Times called it "The comedy of the year. A haunting and hilarious new play . . . Kimberly Akimbo is at once a shrewd satire, a black comedy and a heartbreaking study of how time wounds everyone." Commenting on its earlier run in California, the Los Angeles Times called it "A breezy, foulmouthed, fleet-footed, warmhearted comedy. There have been many dark comedies about dysfunctional families, but this is one of the funniest."

Directing is Joseph Cole Simmons, who has numerous VLT directing credits on MainStage and in the Pinkerton Theatre. In the role of Kimberly is Lee Lawler, a newcomer to VLT. Constantine Nicoloudis plays her father and Jamie Stewart is his wife, Pattie. Also in the cast are Scott Vitale as Jeff, another 16-year old, and Ellie Pattison, as Pattie’s sister.

Tickets are $23 and are onsale now in the theatre’s box office, by phone at 941-488-1115 or online at www.venicestage.com

The theatre is located at 140 W. Tampa Ave on the island in Venice. The Box Office is open 10:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Saturday and opens one hour before all performances.
